How service-area businesses rank on Google Maps.

Plumbers, locksmiths, garage door and HVAC companies go to the customer, so they don't have a storefront for Google to show. That changes how Google Maps ranking works. This guide explains how Google decides who shows up, how to set up a service-area profile correctly, what really helps you rank in more towns, and the mistakes that get profiles suspended.

The short version
  • Google ranks local results on three things: proximity, relevance and prominence. You can't move your address, but you can improve the other two.
  • Service-area businesses should hide their address and list the areas they actually serve. Listing more areas doesn't make you rank in them.
  • Your primary category is one of the strongest signals you control. Pick the one that matches your main money-making service.
  • Reviews, consistent business details across the web and town pages on your website help you reach further from your base.
  • Fake addresses, virtual offices and keyword-stuffed business names can get a profile suspended, which costs far more than any ranking boost.

How Google decides who shows up on Maps

Google says local results are based mainly on three things. Proximity is how close the business is to the person searching or the place in the search. Relevance is how well the profile matches what someone searched for. Prominence is how well known and trusted the business is, based on reviews, links, mentions and its overall presence online.

For a service-area business, proximity is measured from the address you verified with Google, even when that address is hidden. That's why a company often ranks well near its base and fades in towns further away.

Set up a service-area profile correctly

If you go to customers and don't serve them at your address, Google's guidelines say you should hide the address and set a service area instead. Businesses that also have a real, staffed location customers visit can show the address and add a service area.

  • Verify at a real address where you can receive mail and verification, usually your office or home. Never a virtual office or mailbox service.
  • Hide the address if customers don't come to you.
  • Set service areas by town or ZIP code. Google allows up to 20, and they should reflect where you really work, roughly within a couple of hours' drive.
  • Use a local phone number that you answer, and link to the most relevant page on your website.

Important: service areas tell Google where you work. They don't make you rank in those towns on their own.

Get categories and services right

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals you control. Choose the one that describes your main money-making service, such as Plumber, Locksmith, Garage door supplier or HVAC contractor, then add a few secondary categories only for work you really do.

Fill in the services list with the specific jobs people search for, like drain cleaning, water heater installation or lockout service. Write a plain business description about what you do and where, without stuffing it with keywords or town lists.

Reviews: the signal you can grow every week

Reviews affect both ranking and whether people call. Google looks at how many reviews you have, how recent they are, the star rating and what they say. A review system that asks every customer makes this steady instead of random.

  • Ask every happy customer, ideally by text with a direct link, right after the job.
  • Encourage customers to mention the service and the town in their own words. Never write reviews for them.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad, briefly and professionally.
  • Don't buy reviews, offer rewards for them, or only ask happy customers through a filter. These break Google's rules.

Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, phone number and website should match exactly across your Google profile, website and major directories such as Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, the BBB and trade directories. Different phone numbers or old business names create doubt for Google and for customers.

Clean up duplicate listings and old addresses, and keep your hours, holiday hours and services up to date. Our local links and citations work covers this.

How to rank in more towns

You can't change where your verified address is, but you can strengthen relevance and prominence in the towns you want to reach. It takes time, and it works best in towns that are realistically close to your base.

  • Build a strong page on your website for each main town, with real local jobs, photos and reviews.
  • Link your Google profile to the most relevant page.
  • Earn local mentions and links from suppliers, associations, sponsorships and local news.
  • Ask customers in those towns for reviews that mention where the job was.
  • Post job photos and updates regularly, showing work in different towns.

If you open a real, staffed office in a new area, it can have its own verified profile. Fake offices to rank in more towns are against Google's rules and often get suspended. For brands with several real locations, see multi-location SEO.

Mistakes that get profiles suspended

Suspensions hit service businesses often, and getting reinstated can take weeks of lost calls. The most common causes are avoidable.

  • Using a virtual office, mailbox or coworking address you don't really work from.
  • Adding keywords or towns to the business name, like "Best Plumber Austin 24/7".
  • Creating several profiles for the same business.
  • Showing an address customers can't actually visit.
  • Making big changes to the name, address and categories all at once.

Measure your Maps visibility

Rankings on Maps change from street to street, so a single ranking check from your office tells you very little. A local rank grid shows where you appear across your service area. Combine it with your Google Business Profile performance data (calls, direction requests and website clicks) and with call tracking, so you can see which towns bring booked jobs. Should a service-area business hide its address on Google?

Yes, if customers don't come to your address. Google's guidelines ask service-area businesses to hide the address and list the areas they serve instead. You still verify at a real address.

How many service areas can I add?

Google allows up to 20 service areas. They should reflect where you really work. Adding more doesn't make you rank in them, because ranking still depends on proximity, relevance and prominence.

Why do I rank well near my office but not in other towns?

Proximity to your verified address is a big factor. You can reach further with strong reviews, the right categories, town pages on your website and local mentions, but it's always harder further from your base.

Can I use a virtual office to rank in another city?

No. Virtual offices and mailbox addresses are against Google's guidelines and a common reason for suspensions. A real, staffed location can have its own profile.

Does adding keywords to my business name help?

It might give a short-term bump, but it breaks Google's rules and can lead to suspension. Use your real business name and put keywords in your services, description and website instead.

How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?

Fixing categories, services and profile details can help within weeks. Building reviews, local links and town pages usually takes a few months to show strong results.
